Note: Joseph ROLL was the only one in the family that moved to the US. He left behind some sisters of which one went to Argentina. His father died when he about 12 years.

Jacob and Monica (Roll) Schaff
Jacob Schaff was born July 25, 1871 in Selz, Russia. He died August 3, 1945 in Mandan, ND.
His wife, Monica Roll was born February 25, 1874 in Russia. She died January 23, 1903 in Odense, ND. She died from Tuberculosis and was buried in St. Anthony, ND.
Jacob and Monika came to America with three daughters - Margaret, Katie and Veronica. One child had died in Russia. Margaret was born November 17, 1896 in Russia. She died November 6, 1965. She married John P. Schmidt January 20th, 1919. He was born January 1,
1891 in Rumania. He died August 2, 1961 in Mandan, ND. Katie was born March 27, 1898 in Russia. She died January 3, 1987 in Seattle, Washington. She married Henery Helbling November 14, 1916 in Cannonball. He was born October 21, 1894 in Cannonball. He died September 1, 1972 in Seattle.
Veronica was born September 28, 1899 in Russia. She died September 2, 1953 in Mandan, ND. She married John Boehm November 9, 1920. He was born January 30th, 1897 in Russia. He died August 27, 1955 in Mandan. Jacob and Monica and their family came over in November 1900 and spent the winter with Jacob's sister Pauline and brother-in-law Eramus Helbling,
who was born November 11, 1869. Eramus died February 28, 1942.
In the spring of 1901, they homesteaded 12 miles east of his sister Pauline's and later it became known as Odense community. Pauline was the first child born in America. She was born February 13, 1902 in Odense. She died May 4, 1987 in Belle Fouche, SD. she married Anton Vetter Jan 3, 1929. He was born April 29, 1896 in Linton. He died June 1, 1868 in Belle Fouche.
Jacob's mother Magdaline was born August 11, 1830 in Selz, Russia. She died December 9, 1916 in St. Anthony and was buried there. Magdaline came over in the late 1800's and lived with her daughter Pauline until she died.
Jacob married his second wife Eva Doll, who was born July 27, 1870, in Russia and died March 1, 1944 in Mandan, ND.
Jacob's and Eva's children were Ana, Vincent, Adam, stillborn child, Joseph and Daniel.
Ana was born July 9, 1904 in Odense. She died October 30, 1905 in Odense.
Vincent was born November 29, 1905 in Odense. He died March 13, 1906 in Odense.
Adam was born October 9, 1906 in Odense. He died October 13, 1906.
A stillborn child was born November 22, 1909 in Odense.
Joseph was born March 17, 1911. He died June 22, 1925. He drowned in a creek by the farm.
Daniel was born September 12, 1892. Daniel's parents had died in Russia. His mother was Anna Morrell, the sister to Jacob Schaff. His father was Ambrose Morrell. Jacob Schaff brought Daniel to America and raised him.
Jacob was very active in Odense. A store and post office was built across the street from what is now Joseph and Emily Schmidt's farm. Eva had to take mail from Odense's post office to Cannonball three days a week.
Jacob was one of the leading men in building the St. John's Church in Odense in 1908. He was a member of Odense's church until he retired in Mandan in 1943. His daughter Margaret married John P. Schmidt.
