The Purpose of this ROLL Resource Center
"One thing we have discovered is that we are a nation of wanderers. Our ancestors have wandered the globe, and often left us with only one clue to trace their heritage, their surname." -Unknown
The Primary Goals of this Page:
- To collect all information pertaining to the ROLL surname, and the bearers of this surname that might in some way facilitate research of ROLL families worldwide.
- To present this comprehensive information on the web so that it can be freely accessed by any ROLL genealogist at any time, from any place.
- To list all families researching the ROLL surnames.
- To link all pages of interest to people researching the ROLL surname.
- To eventually determine the origin of each ROLL family.
"In order for all ROLL families to be gathered together, from wherever they may have wandered, you need a nest to gather them in." We need your help to do this. Please contribute to this project.
Submit your ROLL Genealogy Information
By submitting your ROLL information, you make this site more helpful for your ROLL relatives to make contact with you. We can't type everything in ourselves, so please submit your information in digital format (by e-mail) to mitch @ rollintl.com. Although we will accept any format (text, Microsoft Word, WordPerfect, etc.,), it is best to submit your genealogy in gedcom (GED) or Family Tree Maker (FTM) format.
You can obtain a free copy of the GEDCOM program at ... For a purchase price of $20.00 (as of July 2001), the Family Tree Maker program is available at ...
To keep the database to a manageable size, the outline listed below will be used. If you send us a GED or FTW formatted database, we can process your genealogy database properly for inclusion into the ROLL Worldwide database.
- In addition to ROLL surnamed ancestors, only include non-ROLL surnamed ancestors one generation "deep".
All "deeper" non-ROLL surnamed generations should not be included.
- Spouses of non-ROLL surnamed ancestors one generation "deep" may be included.
- The parents of non-ROLL surnamed ancestors (spouses of surnamed ROLLs) can be included.
- All emigration information should be recorded.
- To maintain confidentiality, vital information of living persons will be deleted prior to Internet publication. DO NOT delete this information before you send it, as we have "vital information removal" software available for this purpose. Thanks.

Medicine Hat,
CANADA Festival for Germans from Russia - September 2003
"Germans from Russia were one of the largest ethnic groups among the pioneer homesteaders in the Southeastern Alberta and Southwest Saskatchewan. Some migrations of the group to this region of Canada began before the establishment of the Provinces of Alberta and Saskatchewan. The major migrations, however, were between 1905 and 1914. During the Collectivization and Great Purge periods in the Soviet Union more people of German extraction fled to Canada. Again, after World War II, another small wave of Germans from Russia displaced by war, famine and oppression found their sanctuary in this region of Canada. Today, estimates suggest that approximately 40% of Medicine Hatters are either first generation Germans from Russia or their descendents. This gathering will include immigrants from the Volga, Polish and Ukrainian Volhynia, the Black Sea region, the Caucasus, Siberia, Crimea, Bessarabia, Romania, and many others, some of whom came here after a brief settlement in the U.S.A., especially in the Dakotas."

FRANCE
- Alsace
(was a part of Germany from 1871-1918 and 1940-45)
There are a sizeable number of ROLL families living in northeast France called the "ALSACE area." Alsace (German Elsaß, Latin Alsatia) was formerly a part of GERMAN Imperial Territory (Reichland, 1870-1919) and borders along the beautiful Rhine River and GERMAN Black Forest to the east, the Vosges Mountains to the west, The Lauter River to the north, and the southern portion touches the northwest tip of Switzerland. The departments (counties) of Haut-Rhin, and Bas-Rhin (and before 1871, Belfort) in France now embody ALSACE. Alsace is rather French in feeling and tone although German in cultural tradition. Originally Alsace formed part of the Frankish kingdom. In 870, Alsace went to Germany as part of the newly founded Holy Roman Empire, which, though called Roman was in reality German. It retained much of its independence. The Thirty Years War (1618 - 1648) brought great devastation and death to the people of Alsace. The decimated country was ceded to France in 1648 by the Treaty of Westphalia.
After the War, Alsace was repopulated by Catholic families from Switzerland and Germany because France wanted to encourage a Catholic influence in the country. For the next 200 plus years, Alsace was ruled by France. Unrest was felt once again during the period when our ancestors emigrated (in the 1860's) and in 1871, Alsace was ceded to Germany at the end of the Franco-Prussian War (1870). However, after World War I it returned to France in 1919.
The valley of the Thur, where Bitschwiller is located, serves as a pass through the Vosges Mountains and has, for many centuries, been fought over. It provides an alternative route through the mountains between Italy and Spain to Holland and Northern Europe, thus there were commercial causes of conflict. In addition, it provided a buffer between France and Germany as they experienced conflict between the Catholic and Protestant religions. Alsace itself had no conflict between the two religions; it has always been catholic.
View the Communities of Alsace from A to Z.

A number of Alsace ROLLs settled in the areas in and around the Michigan, USA area.
Tom Roll wrote, "My cousin Claude Roll, who is the Director of the Alsacian Genealogical Society at Strasbourg, France, told me that our Roll line migrated from the Black Forest Region of Baden, Germany following the 30 Years War, to Monswiller, Alsace, before 1699. He has a record of this first Roll (Nicola Roll). Claude told me that he has attempted to research the family name in Baden, but that he believes this line of the family name is lost to history."

GREAT BRITIAN - England
A number of ROLL families emigrated from England to America. A seller of Coat of Arms certificates states, "In studying our archives we found that one of the earliest references to the family name Röll dates back in history to the year 1383."
Adrian Roll - aidee@@chain-reaction.fsworld.co.uk wrote: "I live on the east coast of England in a little town called Lowestoft. I can't remember exactly what my auntie said,
but I remember her once saying that we had an ancestor many years ago who was Lord Mayor of London, which is the capitol of England."
Surname variations: ROLL/ROLLE, ROLLINGS, ROLLIN (British), ROLLESTON (Derbyshire), ROLESLEY, and possibly O'ROTHLAIN (Irish). The English ROLL family name originated in Yorkshire, England and traces their ancestral roots back to Norman origin. The ROLL family can be genealogically linked with the following English estates: 1) Castle Hill, Devonshire County, 2) Stevenstone Park Castle, Devon County, and 3) Tregothnan Castle, Cornwall County. This information is found in the Harleian Manuscripts which are records of the "Visitations" or, compilations of research done by heralds with regard to the backgrounds of English and Welsh families. These documents, compiled from about 1530 to the close of the 17th century, contain more than 30,000 registered family lineages, and are now housed in the British Museum in London, England.

GERMANY
The 2nd largest contingency of USA ROLL families hail from Germany. Although no solid evidence has been found, it appears many GERMAN ROLL families came from Switzerland in the 1500's and 1600's. A large population of ROLLs currently live in GERMANY. German common first names and surnames.

A 1997 Roll directory map shows the same pattern as the 2000 map. Markus Weidenbach, a professional German genealogist writes, "I've prepared a map containing all ROLL appearances in German phone directories. As you can see the ROLL are spread over the entire country. There seems to be a concentration in northern Rhineland and southwest Germany, but you have to consider that these areas have a very dense population. If you would like to have a list of all German ROLL addresses (summer 2002), I could send it to you as a text file. But it's very doubtful they are all connected to each other. I guess they derive from several independent clans. For example, the 700 WEIDENBACH families in Germany can be attached to at least eight different clans without any chance to find a relation in the last four centuries! There are about 1,600 ROLL families in Germany, so you can imagine there must be several clans. But if you like me to do a research on the other families (at least for their origin), I will of course be at your service."

Harm Rieper of Germany wrote, "In the Herrenberg area (south of Stuttgart, Germany, now Baden-Wuerttemberg, former Kingdom of Wuerttemberg) the name ROLL and ROLLER name is quite common. In the village of Altingen, Catholic ROLLs are demonstrably from 1659 to the beginning of the 20th century. I just worked on editing the Catholic Church records of Altingen, which will take quite a while to finalize. There may also be Lutheran ROLLs (Altingen had Lutheran and Catholic inhabitants), but this is the second part of editing the data."

The NETHERLANDS
The largest percentage of ROLLs in the USA are the Dutch descendents of the Jan MANGALESE-ROLL line, who emigrated from Utrecht, Utrecht, Netherlands in the 1600's. There were two main lines; one migrated through the state of New Jersey, and the other by way of Pennsylvania.
William Henry Roll of Blythe, California has a nice
Dutch ROLL "Windmill" Genealogy Page. A very detailed history of European ROLL family migration can be found at his site. William lists additional ROLL family sites. William writes, "There was, in the 18th century, a well-established Roll family (Jacobus ROLLE, born before 1695) in the town of Woudenberg, Utrecht, Netherlands, and in nearby towns. Opperkoopman Heyn ROL sailed on the ship Nieuw-Hoorn under Willem IJsbrantsz Bontekoe for Java in the East Indies in 1619. There is an interesting article, "Logboek/Toen het schip in honderdduizend stukken sprong," by Peter Henk Steenhuis at
www.trouw.nl/artikelactueel/998844896036.html. The article is in
Dutch. Tom van Baar has found that there was a Roll family in Hoorn, North Holland, the Netherlands. I have read there was a Roll family in Purmerend, North Holland, the Netherlands."
Heinric ROL, an Anabaptist leader and martyr, was born in Grave, Dutch province, North Brabant and was burned at the stake in 1534 at Maastricht, Dutch province of Limburg. ROLLs also were recorded living in the towns of Baam, Deventer, Gravenhage, and Zoelen.

The first known ROLL to immigrate to Russia was Heinrick Rol. Heinrick was born at Grave in the Dutch province of North Brabant and moved to Muenster, West Phalia, Russia in 1532. He was a Lutheran-turned-Anabaptist leader and marter. No ROLLs were found in the first major 1760's German migration to the Volga region
in Russia. Two unrelated German ROLL family branches traveled to South Russia, now the Ukraine, in the early 1800's. The Catholic group settled in the Beresan District
and the Evangelical (Lutheran) homesteaded near Odessa

SWITZERLAND
We have found a fair number of USA ROLL families originating from Switzerland. Other surname spellings include ROLLE and von ROLL. The use of “de”, for example, “comte de ROLLE”, shows the family was French speaking. German speaking Swiss used “von”, as in “von ROLL”. The Von Roll Group
, headquartered in Zürich, is a worldwide business conglomerate.

William Henry Roll of Blythe, California wrote, "Roll (or Rol) is also a word found in several languages including Yiddish. The surname Roll may be a toponym, a surname based on a person's place of origin, derived from the town of Roll, near Lake Geneva, Switzerland, near the places mentioned as follows: There were Roll families, in the 16th century, in the Swiss cantons Geneva, Bern, Soleure, and Uri, and in Alsace, France, and Baden-Wurttenberg,
Germany. Some French Roll families were in Alsace, Savoie, and the
Rhône-Alpes. Those in Switzerland
were in cantons Fribourg, Soleure, Solothurn, and the valley of the Argue."

1850-1990 ROLL Family Distribution per Capita:
In 1850, ROLL families were concentrated in New Jersey, Georgia, and Ohio. By the 1880's there was an upswing of ROLL families in New York and Pennsylvania. Oregon reached the highest per capital ratio of ROLLs in 1920 with 1 per 500 individuals, followed by Missouri, Nebraska, and Kentucky. Due to the 1890's emigration of German-Russian ROLLs, North Dakota and Montana, with their less dense population, saw a fair representation of ROLL families on the open prairies, trailed by Indiana and Ohio. Although these states had a larger per capita population of ROLLs, Ohio, Washington, New York, Colorado, Kentucky, Michigan, Arizona, Nebraska and many other states had a larger number of ROLL residents. View other surname growth maps at www.hamrick.com.
According to the 1990 USA census, the ROLL surname comprises .002 percent of the total population or two ROLLs for every 100,000 people in the United States. Check out the U.S. Census Bureau to search for other surnames.

NORTH DAKOTA
,
OR, and
WA,
USA
Virtually all of the ROLL families which homesteaded around the 1900's in southwest North Dakota and some parts of Oregon and Washington, had lived in the Beresan District, South Russia for about 100 years before arriving in the USA. Their roots go back to the Pfalz area in southwest Germany in the 1600's and probably to Switzerland or Alsace, France area in the 1500's.
